The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Mr. Geir O. Pedersen met today in Damascus with Syria’s Foreign Minister al-Shaibani, where they held a comprehensive discussion on the political transition process, including the People’s Assembly, and regional and international dimensions.

 The situation in Sweida and the Northeast was discussed in detail, as was the situation on the coast. Special Envoy Pedersen reaffirmed the full support of the United Nations for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, calling for an end to Israel’s violations, and for internal issues in Syria to be addressed through dialogue and genuine efforts to build trust.

 He stressed the United Nations’ support to the Syrian government and people in seeking internal peace and stability through an inclusive, transparent and credible political transition in line with the core principles of Security Council resolution 2254 (2015).
