08 Dec 2024 - Obviously today it’s really a watershed moment in the history of Syria. It’s a nation that has endured 14 years nearly of relentless suffering and unspeakable loss. And let me once again extend my deepest solidarity to all who have borne the weight of death, destruction, detention, and untold human rights violations.

08 Dec 2024 - Today marks a watershed moment in Syria’s history—a nation that has endured nearly 14 years of relentless suffering and unspeakable loss. The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria extends once again his deepest solidarity to all who have borne the weight of death, destruction, detention, and untold human rights violations.

07 Dec 2024 - Good to see you. We are all obviously following very closely the developments in Syria, and the situation is changing by the minute. So, while I'm addressing you, things are changing inside of Syria.
-
01 Dec 2024 - I am closely monitoring the situation on the ground in Syria. Recent days have seen a dramatic shift in frontlines, including significant advances by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a group that remains a designated terrorist group by the Security Council, and a wide range of armed opposition factions. We have also seen pro-Government airstrikes.

24 Nov 2024 - Obviously, we are at a very critical moment in the region, and I think we're all following very closely what's happening in Gaza and Lebanon and my message has all the time been that we need now to make sure that we have immediately a ceasefire in Gaza, that we have a ceasefire in Lebanon, and that we avoid Syria being dragged even further into the conflict

07 Oct 2024 - In response to the rapidly worsening humanitarian situation in Lebanon and its spillover effects into Syria, United Nations Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, Ms. Najat Rochdi, convened an emergency meeting of the Humanitarian Task Force (HTF) in Geneva.
-
02 Oct 2024 - The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Mr. Geir O. Pedersen, reiterates the Secretary-General’s urgent call for a ceasefire in Gaza, and a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon. He does so having repeatedly sounded the alarm about the implications for Syria and Syrians of escalating regional conflict.
-
30 May 2024 - You will have heard that I emphasized (to the Security Council) that if the current crisis continues like it is now, it will not, you know, we are not seeing a status quo, we are seeing a worsening of the situation, and the situation in Syria now is the worst ever. You know, we have had 13 years of war and conflict and never has the situation been as bad as it is today, in particular when it comes to the economy, but the security situation of course is impacted by what is happening in Gaza.
-
27 May 2024 - Thank you so much. I think it's clear to all of us why this meeting is so important: because after 13 years of war and conflict, the Syrian people’s suffering is deepening, levels of funding have dropped to their lowest levels, two out of every three people need aid, yet programming is stretched thin, and indeed political will to push for a solution is in very, very short supply.

02 Apr 2024 - I condemn the attack on the diplomatic premises of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Damascus on 1 April. The principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel must be respected in all cases in accordance with international law. At a time of heightened violence and dangers in the region, instead of escalations, actors should be strictly respecting their obligations under international law.
