Statement Attributable to the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Mr. Geir O. Pedersen

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Mr. Geir O. Pedersen, reiterates the Secretary-General’s urgent call for a ceasefire in Gaza, and a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon. He does so having repeatedly sounded the alarm about the implications for Syria and Syrians of escalating regional conflict. He is deeply concerned that tensions in the region have risen sharply in recent days, including with continued Israeli strikes in Syria.

He underlines the vulnerability of tens of thousands of Syrians, many of whom have been displaced multiple times, who are once again fleeing for their lives, facing new waves of hardship.  Mr. Pedersen is particularly concerned about the severe effect any further violence would have on Syrian civilians, who have already endured unimaginable suffering. Like all civilians caught up in conflict, they must be protected wherever they are.

The Special Envoy reiterates the Secretary-General’s condemnation of the broadening of the conflict. He calls for respect for the sovereignty of Syria and indeed all states in the region. The need for maximum restraint and calm has never been more urgent, including de-escalation across the entire region, as well as within Syria towards a nationwide ceasefire in line with Security Council resolution 2254.
