08 Mar 2019 - Today, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen, met with the Women’s Advisory Board (WAB) in Geneva. The Women’s Advisory Board, comprised of diverse women from civil society, is an independent source of expertise and advice for the Special Envoy including on bringing a gender perspective to bear on all topics under discussion.

I have had now the pleasure of being in the job for eight weeks, you just heard my statement - you heard that I got the support I wanted from the Security Council, obviously as I said in my briefing to the Council the challenges are enormous and we all understand that my task will also, of course, be difficult.

15 Feb 2019 - Mr. Pedersen: As you know I have been travelling rather extensively and of course [I felt] my first duty, was to go to Damascus and to discuss with the government and then to go on to Riyadh to discuss with the SNC. And I think in both places I was very positively received and we had in-depth discussions on what is my mandate. And as you all know my mandate is Security Council resolution 2254.

14 Dec 2018 - The efforts to establish a constitutional committee have been the subject of continuing consultations. In this context, Special Envoy de Mistura anticipates hosting high-level representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Turkey in Geneva early next week as he finalizes his assessment, to be presented to the Security Council on 20 December, of the possibility of establishing a credible, balanced and inclusive constitutional committee.

The Secretary-General takes this opportunity to reiterate his deepest gratitude to Staffan de Mistura of Italy for his concerted efforts and contributions to the search for peace in Syria.
